Artist Statement

My work is a personal act of escape—a way of slipping out of the constraints of my own life and into imagined spaces where I can breathe, wander, and rebuild a sense of self. Through landscape painting and portrait photography, I construct worlds that exist somewhere between reality and dream, solitude and fantasy. The works not only explore a deep connection with the natural world, but also represent resistance and perseverance in the face of financial hardship and adverse living conditions.

Through landscape painting and portrait photography, I create worlds that feel just beyond reach—quiet, dreamlike places that offer a sense of freedom I rarely experience in daily life. Influenced by the Golden Age painters and the subdued light of Tonalism, I use atmosphere, colour, and distance to express longing, endurance, and the fragile hope of transformation.

Each image is a record of persistence. I make art not from comfort, but from necessity—with the hope that selling my work might unlock opportunities to leave the West End of Newcastle, while the act of creating already carries me to new horizons.

OVER THERE

"Over There" is an ongoing series exploring the land, sea and sky begun in 2025. The initiating spark for the series was the idea that somewhere, over there is a better place than here. This work is largely connected to the hope of one day leaving a deprived urban are and reconnecting with the natural world. One which is ever-present in the city of Newcastle, and yet seems to slip futher and further away the closer you get to it.

The sky here has watched the struggles and suffering of many of generations trying to get by and survive poverty, industrialisation, capitalism, abuse and much more. Yet it stands, tantalisingly beckoning, teasing almost, that it also sees somewhere greener, richer and safe.

Support me in my dream to make "Over There" over here and also get some great original artwork for your home.

Curiosity_Self

Curiosity_Self is a photography and digital art collection from 2019-2024 which explores self portraiture as a vehicle for self-determined identity. The portraits are taken within the privacy of the home studio and because of this may imaged exhibit a vulnerability that would otherwise go unseen.

The photographs represent the state of 'becoming' and often explore fantasy or dark themes through costume and makeup. The recurring 'Old Gods' theme examines a more primitive time, conjuring feelings of an ancient connection with the natural world and earthy colour palettes pay homage to the painters of the Golden Age.

Locations of the composite images include Whitley Bay and Arthurs Seat.
