It's here! After many years of planning and observing amateur singers across Newcastle and Edinburgh I'm finally offering a 10 week short course designed to build confidence in reading music. This practical course focusses specifically on skills directly related to the practice of learning and performing from music scores.
Unlike traditional music theory courses which tend toward old-school academic study of texts and lean towards the skills required for composing music, Music Reading for Singers is centred on translating notation to real music.
Since this is the pilot course, it's open only to those with a prior connection to Zualski School of Voice. The course will run again if interest is high enough, so please RSVP and newcomers will be added to the waiting list and first to hear about future iterations.
Topics of Study:
Brief introduction to the origins of Western Musical Notation
Musical Notation as a graph of pitch against time
Interval Training and relative pitch (Aural skills)
Note Durations and Rhythms
Time Signatures (Simple and complex)
Scales, Key Signatures and Accidentals
Sight-singing
Course Materials:
Students will need a sharp pencil, ruler, eraser. Manuscript paper is provided.
Participants will pay per session and classes will be held at a private residence in Newcastle. Zualski Students - please ask about this in your lessons.
