NOVUM 24 - Do your thing with Cirque Bijou

Last week was the Novum Festival in Newcastle, organised by Curated Places to show off the wonderful, diverse performance culture of Newcastle, but also to engage with the public through a wide range of free performances.

It was my privilege to lead the backing choir for four performances of ‘Do your Thing’ by the fabulous Cirque Bijou. And fabulous was the word of the day with the singers dressed in bright colours, sparkles and big smiles while the performers showcased their talents on Aerial Silks, Trapeze and more.

Some might say that the true highlight of the show was the Elton John style, white grand piano played skilfully by James Graham. The twist is that thanks to the precision crane operation, the piano flew some 10 meters over the audiences heads with Alba Torriset perched gracefully on the top singing Love and Hate in a Different Time (Gabriels), Sinnerman (Nina Simone) and Rocket Man (Elton John).

Not only that, but the extraordinarily talented Gracie Hill (@gracie.circus) and Rachel Kirby (@littlehairypanic) hung from the bottom performing death-defying stunts that can only be described as spectacular. Even more so when considering the high wind speeds which almost prevented the performance from going ahead at all.

A huge thank you to all of the team at Novum, Curated Place and Cirque Bijoux for being so welcoming and appreciative. Let’s collaborate again in the future! Xx
